Case Study 5
Cellar Conversion

Before Cellar Conversion

The victorian coal cellar was to be converted to a utility room including a belfast sink and plumbing for a washing machine.  A separate WC was also to be provided.

Waterproofing System Chosen

Either a cement based or cavity-drain plastic membrane system would have been suitable.  Insulation valves and the opportunity to hide pipe and cable runs made the membrane system the more attractive option.  The membrane system also allowed for easier fixings to the wall surfaces, as they were independent of the membrane itself.

Design Features

The brick staircase to the cellar was uneven and potentially dangerous for regular use.  The staircase was therefore replaced with a timber staircase.

As the cellar floor was below the drainage system, a macerator unit was installed to provide a pumped drainage system to connect to the main drains.

The membrane system managed water that entered the system via in-built drainage channels; sump and pump with pump failure alarm.
