Basement refurbishment
SWS cementitious system
The kitchen and bathroom were to be renewed and the existing structural waterproofing replaced, as dampness was evident to wall surfaces.
The side external wall of the kitchen and bathroom were 1 metre below ground level. It was decided to renew the structural waterproofing to the walls but not the floor slab as the floor slab already had a waterproofing barrier and was showing no sign of dampness.
A plastic membrane system would have presented problems in removing the water that collected behind the system. It was therefore decided to apply a cement based structural waterproofing barrier to the affected walls.
A cement based waterproofing system was chosen as it allowed for a thermal board dry-lining plastering system to be applied to the waterproofed surfaces. This improved insulation values (the kitchen in particular had previously suffered from condensation) and provided a wall surface that could be fixed to without damaging the waterproofing system.
Humidity controlled extractor fans were fitted to the kitchen and bathroom. New kitchen units and a new bathroom suite were fitted with wall tiling to finish.
